Sculpture Garden in the Heart of NYC

Yes, you read that right. This beautiful sculpture garden is in the middle of downtown Manhattan, hidden away between two quiet streets. If you’ve happened to stumble upon this garden while walking down Elizabeth Street, consider yourself very lucky. It is not everyday that you find a gem like this one in such a busy, evolving city.

The Elizabeth Street Garden is the perfect place to escape the hustle of the city streets and curl up in a good book. The garden is full of hidden pathways leading to benches and tiny tables with chairs. The giant sculptures and blooming flowers create an atmosphere buzzing with creativity and inspiration. This space is so important in a neighborhood like this one where there is only three feet of open space per resident. Us New Yorkers don’t get the luxury of open space to call our own which is why this garden means so much to so many of us.

Around since 1903, this garden represents a time in history. It was originally built in partnership with a school, by architect C.B.J. Snyder, and served as a civic and social center for the surrounding residents. In the 1970s the school was torn down but the garden remained.

Sadly, potential developers are looking into destroying this one-of-a-kind space in the city, turning the garden into just another apartment complex. Whether you are a native New Yorker or someone across the world who someday hopes to visit this garden, please take the time to send this electronic letter to those who have the ability to protect the Elizabeth Street Garden.

It pains me to know that a place full of history, wonder, and a unique perspective of art could be destroyed for moreย city housing. Everyone deserves to seek the same creative inspiration that I have, from this space. The sculptures, flowers, and even people this space attracts have influenced the way I dress and the lens I view the world by.

The garden has reminded me to dress with a sense of ease that is pleasing to the eye and unique to myself. It has also showed me how to mix classic pieces with more modern ones, like these crepe pants and dark leather jacket. Just like the garden is a reminder of the simple beauty in an ever-changing city, my wardrobe remains classic and refreshing while I continue to grow and change.

My favorite piece in the garden? The greyhound sculptures, of course. I have been a sucker for greyhounds ever since my family rescued my sweet, three-year-old baby girl, Luna, this past May. Coming to this garden reminds me of her when I am missing her most. And, with the greyhound winning the National Dog Show this November, the statues might just be a lucky charm for the future of the Elizabeth Street Garden.

Pumpkin Pie Smoothie Recipe

With Thanksgiving coming up, I have one thing on my mind. PUMPKIN. Ok, maybe mashed potatoes and stuffing as well…

During the fall time I crave every kind of food in a pumpkin flavor. Pumpkin coffee, pumpkin pancakes, pumpkin soup, you name it. There’s just something about fall that makes me want to eat it all of the time. Pumpkin puts us in the holiday spirit and makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I recently discovered Bliss Nut-Butters through Instagram and have been eating their nut-butters nonstop since. I will admit, I practically ate the whole jar of their Cinnamon Chia Seed Peanut Butter before I could even share this recipe. It really is THAT delicious. What’s their secret to making the butters so addictive? I would have to say the sea salt combined with the sweetness of the cinnamon!

img_7816

After eating half the jar I had the idea to include it in a smoothie with pumpkin. I figured the cinnamon would act as pumpkin pie spice and the peanuts would add some extra flavor and nutrition. For this recipe you will need:

1/2 can of pumpkin

1 spoonful of Bliss Nut Butters Cinnamon

1 frozen banana

soy milk

Simply blend up all your ingredients and add soy milk as needed.

Enjoy! The cinnamon peanut butter adds the perfect hint of sweetness to the pumpkin without overdoing it. It’s like a pumpkin pie without the excess sugar. Next time you feel like cheating with a slice of pie, blend this smoothie together instead!

The Contradiction of Millennials in this Presidential Election

With the election results in, I think we can all say we are a bit shocked. Whether you are pleasantly surprised or moved to fear, it is important to reflect on the entire election process that occurred over the last few months. It is no doubt that the media, specifically social media, has been the largest contributor to the way this election played out. The media blew many little things into crucial issues, causing these issues to go viral all over social platforms and the internet. In many cases, what was reported was indeed false.

Along with false circulations, I think it is even more important to consider the presence of celebrities, bloggers, and brands and their position in the Presidential election. Many of these influencers chose to state their opinion openly on social media using hashtags such as #Imwithher and #govote. Social media was primarily dominated by this large support system for Hillary Clinton, which I believe led to a false sense of assurance for many Americans. The results go to show that social media DOES NOT reflect the majority of the United States and that sometimes only certain voices are heard.

This being said, I think it is even MORE important that we discuss Donald Trump, his decisions during this election period, and how millennials react to his actions and words. Why is it that us as young people are so appalled by Trump’s insults and disrespectful comments towards women, yet we idolize rappers like Kanye West for preaching the same exact beliefs? Google the lyrics for West’s song “Feed Back” and ask yourself, what makes this ok compared to any words that Trump has said? I honestly cannot answer these questions but I think it is something important that needs to be considered and discussed.

If we are going to tear apart Trump for his insults against women and minorities, we need to first look at what we have allowed in this society as millennials. How can we allow West to get away with such derogatory comments but then ridicule Trump for similar comments? We need to truly think about our own actions and our own views for they are extremely hypocritical. We try to move towards progression of women’s rights but then continue to support rappers who preach offensive lyrics. Since when is acceptable for rappers to get away with this but as soon as a politician does the same, it is insulting, demeaning, and unacceptable?

If we expect a change in our society then we need to start by standing up to EVERYONE, whether it is your favorite rapper, clothing brand designer, or the boy next to you in math class, not just a politician in the Presidential election. How much affect does the President really have on our daily culture as millennials? It is more so music, celebrities, media, and our friends that effect our own world views. If you expect change, start with what you expose yourself to every day. Once we do this, elders will begin to respect our beliefs as young people and actually listen to what we have to say.

Although you may not agree with the results of this election, it is important to remember that you are the future for change. If our views as a society continue to contradict one another, no positive changes will be made. However, even with these challenges in America, we are still the most beautiful country in the World. Only in America can women vote, gay people marry, and people openly express their opinions. These are amazing rights that we seem to take for granted every day. In the upcoming months, and even years, just remember how lucky you are to be a citizen of the country that you are.

The Rise of Concert Merchandise in Street Style Fashion

Kanye West and Justin Bieber have become just as famous for their stylish concert merchandise as they are their music. Their designs can be seen on some of the most influential fashion bloggers and celebrities as well as everyday people wanting to support their favorite artists. Justin Bieber’s collection is even being sold in Barney’s. Since when did concert merchandise fit in right next to Prada, Gucci, and other designer labels at high-end department stores?

madison-0241

I have been quietly observing the rise in this trend for awhile now. When these artists first released their designs, fans were buzzing over them simply to support the amazing albums these artists had just released. Fans bought their merchandise as a thank you for a wonderful album. So when did it become the fashion-forward choice to sport this merchandise?

madison-0198

Every artist represents a certain lifestyle and a specific “coolness” factor. Kanye sings about subjects that are offensive and degrading to women, giving him a bad representation in the world; yet people seem to still love him? Meanwhile, Bieber just seems to be making bad decisions in his daily life, outside of the lyrics he sings. It is clear that Kanye and Bieber represent the “I don’t give a f***” attitude that many millennials aspire to have. Millennials see Kanye and Bieber’s popularity within the world and think, if I act the same way, maybe I can be just as idolized as them. Wearing their apparel is just one way to act just like them without being a complete asshole.

madison-0203

Not only this, but they both are artistic geniuses. So maybe it’s that celebrities and street style bloggers wanted to support other artists in today’s creative-centric society? Pushing the controversy of his lyrics aside, Kanye is a musical genius, and now a well-respected designer. Bieber has also blown the world away with hit after hit from his latest album Purpose. Many creative people are jumping into all different kinds of sectors of the artistic community. Fashion bloggers have started their own clothing lines, fashion designers have started their own blogs, models are collaborating with brands on creating collections… everyone is dabbling into each and every artistic field. It is almost expected that every creative person does it all.

madison-0224

All in all, I love this trend of concert merchandise. Not only are you supporting your favorite artist through a trendy t-shirt or bomber jacket, but you are supporting an entire community of budding entrepreneurs. Of course I wouldn’t call Kanye and Bieber entrepreneurs, but they are just the beginning of a world of creative people creating their own clothing lines and changing the fashion industry. Designer labels are becoming less of the “cool” fashion to sport rather than the new designs that bloggers, models, and musicians are creating for us to wear. And, hey, they are way more affordable!
