The Power of a Place

We all know the feeling. The feeling of nostalgia. The feeling of all of your memories flooding back. The feeling as if you never even left. All of these feelings are part of visiting a place that holds such an important place in your memory.

There are many places that remind me of memories from my childhood. My beach house. The bedroom from my teenage years. My grandparent’s house. All of these places instantly bring me back to when I was 12 years old and running around outside, barefoot, my biggest concern being what flavor of ice cream I would consume that night. Whenever I visit here I quickly forget the responsibilities of adulthood and feel as if I have no worries in the world.

Why do places have this effect on the human brain? According to Nautilus (my new favorite publication, might I add), we actually seem to replace all of our childhood memories in order to make room for new ones that form during adulthood. However, these scrambled memories are brought into consciousness when stimulated with certain scents, words, or places. So, as it turns out, our favorite places act as a source of stimulation to recover our repressed memories that we may not think about on a daily basis.

This beautiful lake is where many of my fondest childhood memories were made. Ones that I hope to always cherish and never forget. Being by the lake makes me feel as if just yesterday I was canoeing and catching fish off of the dock with my pop-pop.

While much has changed since then, including my sense of style, I will always feel like a young, happy preteen by that lake. I am also happy to say that my style has upgraded from those days. My daily uniform back then may or may not have included an old basketball camp t-shirt and colorful, mesh shorts from Limited Too.

If it’s been awhile since you’ve visited a place that reminds you of all the amazing memories that molded you into the individual you are today, then what are you waiting for? Go out there and relive the happiness a younger you once experienced. Trust me, it will refresh your outlook on how you are living as an adult.

So tell me, what is your favorite place that brings all of your most cherished memories flooding back? What place is the most powerful to you?

A New Year, A New Adventure

2017 is just a few hours away and with this new year comes the new year’s resolutions. Have you decided yet what you are striving for once the year turns? Many people make it their goal to exercise, eat healthy, or maybe read a few more books, but a new year is about so much more than just these minuscule goals. Yes, miniscule. In the grand scheme of life are these things the secret to your happiness? Definitely not.

In the middle of January I am leaving the United States in order to study abroad for five months across the Atlantic Ocean, in London. As the day of my departure comes closer and closer, my parents and friends keep asking me why I have to leave. Of course my parents thought I was crazy when I said this, but I told them it was because I was getting too comfortable here.

I am someone that needs to be constantly challenged or I get bored and fall into a “funk”. In the last few months I have been experiencing this funk greatly. While I was happy, I knew I needed a change and I to push myself outside of my own limitations. What better way to do this than to move to a new country where you know nothing about the culture or the people?

There is something so frightening yet so exciting about living an entirely different life for a few months. I am ready to meet new people, explore new cities, and experience the discomfort of something entirely new. When is the last time that you went into something blind and alone? These leaps of faith are the ones that help us to learn the most about ourselves and grow into the person we want to be. It gives us a sense of clarity about what we love, appreciate, and want in the future.

If you have the feeling of extreme comfort in your life, go out and destroy that feeling. Move somewhere new, take a trip alone, or do something that scares you. You will never know what you can learn about yourself until you try. Nobody progresses anywhere by being comfortable in life. So make 2017 a year of growth and happiness, not by losing weight or earning an A in one of your classes, but by going outside and experiencing life.

The Rise of Concert Merchandise in Street Style Fashion

Kanye West and Justin Bieber have become just as famous for their stylish concert merchandise as they are their music. Their designs can be seen on some of the most influential fashion bloggers and celebrities as well as everyday people wanting to support their favorite artists. Justin Bieber’s collection is even being sold in Barney’s. Since when did concert merchandise fit in right next to Prada, Gucci, and other designer labels at high-end department stores?

I have been quietly observing the rise in this trend for awhile now. When these artists first released their designs, fans were buzzing over them simply to support the amazing albums these artists had just released. Fans bought their merchandise as a thank you for a wonderful album. So when did it become the fashion-forward choice to sport this merchandise?

Every artist represents a certain lifestyle and a specific “coolness” factor. Kanye sings about subjects that are offensive and degrading to women, giving him a bad representation in the world; yet people seem to still love him? Meanwhile, Bieber just seems to be making bad decisions in his daily life, outside of the lyrics he sings. It is clear that Kanye and Bieber represent the “I don’t give a f***” attitude that many millennials aspire to have. Millennials see Kanye and Bieber’s popularity within the world and think, if I act the same way, maybe I can be just as idolized as them. Wearing their apparel is just one way to act just like them without being a complete asshole.

Not only this, but they both are artistic geniuses. So maybe it’s that celebrities and street style bloggers wanted to support other artists in today’s creative-centric society? Pushing the controversy of his lyrics aside, Kanye is a musical genius, and now a well-respected designer. Bieber has also blown the world away with hit after hit from his latest album Purpose. Many creative people are jumping into all different kinds of sectors of the artistic community. Fashion bloggers have started their own clothing lines, fashion designers have started their own blogs, models are collaborating with brands on creating collections… everyone is dabbling into each and every artistic field. It is almost expected that every creative person does it all.

All in all, I love this trend of concert merchandise. Not only are you supporting your favorite artist through a trendy t-shirt or bomber jacket, but you are supporting an entire community of budding entrepreneurs. Of course I wouldn’t call Kanye and Bieber entrepreneurs, but they are just the beginning of a world of creative people creating their own clothing lines and changing the fashion industry. Designer labels are becoming less of the “cool” fashion to sport rather than the new designs that bloggers, models, and musicians are creating for us to wear. And, hey, they are way more affordable!
